How Loud is a Silent Air Compressor?
Although people will have different opinions about what noise level makes an air compressor silent or quiet, we regard anything under 70 decibels to be classed as quiet compared to a standard compressor.
Below 70 decibels is the equivalent of a hairdryer or washing machine and thus, will be quiet enough to not annoy your neighbours!
Hyundai Silent Air Compressors:
Starting with the most popular, and generally the quietest of the air compressors across all of our ranges, the Hyundai silent air compressors come in at just 60 decibels. That’s the same noise level as 2 people having a conversation!
The larger models (100 litre tank) are slightly higher at 65-69 decibels.

Fini Quiet Air Compressors:
Our collection of Fini air compressors is quite varied! Technically, the Fini Siltek compressors are even quieter than the Hyundai at just 59 decibels! But looking at all compressors across in Fini range, it includes handy wall mounted air compressors which are both 69 decibels.

Nuair Low Noise Air Compressor:
At the slightly louder end of the silent air compressor ranges is Nuair. Now, Nuair offer a good range of different air compressors, starting with the 10 litre portable compressor at just 62 decibels. However, the belt driven compressors are a little noisier than the direct drive counterparts from Hyundai and Siltek and tend to come in between 66 – 69 decibels.
Can we just add though that this is still impressively quiet – especially as this includes large compressors with 200L and 270L tanks. Compressors of that size are often used in garages!

PCL Quiet Compressors:
Lastly, PCL offers a couple of compressors that come in at 72 dB(A). There is not really a noticeable difference between these and the Nuair compressors above in terms of noise level.
These are in smaller models (6 litre and 24 litre) – so still a good bet for home garages as it shouldn’t bother your neighbours too much!

Comparing Silent Air Compressors
The chart below shows how loud our silent air compressors are in decibels. As an illustration, we have added diagrams of sounds that are of a similar noise level.
How is a silent air compressor different to a normal compressor?
Silent air compressors come with built in low noise pump units or high quality noise insulating casing over the mechanical parts to reduce the noise level compared to standard compressors. It’s fair to say that a standard compressor for your home garage could be a bit too noisy, it depends on 1) how big your land is, and 2) how understanding your neighbours are!
